Big Blue Button Meeting Requirements

This is a hybrid course that includes “live” synchronous class meetings one night a week during scheduled class time using the Big Blue Button web conferencing system. Students are required to log in and attend the synchronous meetings. Students will need access to a computer or tablet with reliable high-speed internet connection, along with a webcam, microphone and either speakers or headphones.  

The remaining credit hours for the course will be fulfilled through online assignments completed in myCMU. Students must participate in the live meetings and online assignments to be successful in this course.  

Students will access Big Blue Button meetings by clicking “Online Meetings” located on the left side menu of this course in myCMU. To participate in the meeting click on the appropriate weeks link during the scheduled time and day of the course. Recorded sessions can also be accessed here. 

Textbooks

Students in the course MUST purchase access to Connect for the course. Connect is online courseware used for submitting assignments. Connect access is all you need for the course. It contains an ebook.

Teachers, Schools and Society: A Brief Introduction to Education, 5th edition with Connect Access, by David M. Sadker and Karen Zittelman.  McGraw-Hill Publishing. ISBN-13: 978-1-260-30392-6

After you purchase the access, Connect has a low-cost print copy of the book that you can purchase from McGraw-Hill if you would like an additional printed copy of the text. 

On the first day of the course, the instructor will post a link to the course Connect website on the Resources and Materials page in myCMU.  The student can click on that link to register for the course. At that time, the student can use an access code purchased from the bookstore, a credit card or sign up for a free 14-day trial.

Course Description

A study of the historical, philosophical, legal, and social development of education in the United States with an emphasis on cultural diversity and ELL as they affect students, faculty, and the education system as a whole.  2 credit hours.

Course Objectives

Students will:

 

  1. Review, analyze, and reflect upon the Missouri Teacher Standards.
  2. Identify the role of education in American Society.
  3. Investigate major historical, philosophical, legal, and social issues affecting American education.
  4. Clarify the roles, expectations, and ethics of professional educators.
  5. Be introduced to the Missouri Show-Me Standards, Grade/Course Level Expectations, and Common Core.
  6. Identify and reflect upon life and school experiences that will impact the beginning educator’s development and effectiveness
  7. Recognize the relationship of child/adolescent development and how home and society can   place students at risk.
  8. Examine the multicultural context of education and prepare students to understand and teach learners from diverse backgrounds, with diverse characteristics, and with differing social identities.
  9. Be acquainted with, recognize, and draw conclusions about the behaviors of effective educators.
  10. Introduced to learning, motivational, behavioral, and management theories.
  11. Be made aware of legislation specialized services and their responsibility as teachers to the special needs learner.
  12. Examine the challenges ELLs face (both academically and culturally) and learn to scaffold instruction and promote student interaction that is both structured and supported.
  13. Be informed of how culture, gender, intellectual, social, and physical ability differences affect the learner. 
  14. Be exposed to a number of media communication tools utilized by the professional educators
  15. Evaluate and reflect their influence on student learning.
  16. Recognize the social, ethical, and legal issues of technology in the classroom.
  17. Be informed of the importance of practicing professional ethics and its impact on the future as a professional educator.
