By selecting this course you have chosen to investigate a live performing art, which necessitates that you attend the theatre. It is your responsibility to find a live theatrical event in your area, purchase tickets, and attend the production. As proof of attendance, you should upload to the course a .jpg photograph of you at the theatre. You must also write a 3-page production review.

Course Description

An introduction to the art of theatre including an introduction to both classic and modern plays, analysis and criticism of the plays, and an examination of the roles of the director, the actor, the designer, and the technician. Fulfills “Fine Arts” requirement.

Course Objectives

This course is designed to expose the student to the live performance experience through the study of the various elements of theatre and performance, the history of theatre from ancient Greeks to modern times, and dramatic literature. Students will be required to read and analyze various plays and films of plays, to view a live production, and to explore the process of theatrical production.

The following are some of the primary overall objectives of this course:

  • Gaining factual knowledge (terminology, classifications, methods, trends)
  • Learning fundamental principles, generalizations, or theories
  • Gaining a broader understanding and appreciation of intellectual/cultural activity
  • Encouraging students to become theatre artists and/or audiences
