Course Description

SO340 Teaching with Historic Places. 3 hours. A multi-dimensional study of historic places for use in the social studies classroom to understand history, historical change, and cultural continuity. Cross-listed with HI340. Prerequisite: HI117 or HI118.

Course Objectives

Upon successful completion of the course, each participant should be able to:

  1. develop an appreciation for national heritage revealed in historic places. (MoSPE 1C1)
  2. examine historical data that can be derived from historic places. (MoSPE 1C1)
  3. apply techniques used by historians, anthropologists, and archaeologists to investigate historic places. (MoSPE 1C1)
  4. examine and apply critical thinking skills to maximize learning from historic places. (MoSPE 1C1, 4C1, 4C2)
  5. develop curriculum materials that employ historic places in the study of history and/or the social sciences. (MoSPE 1C1, 3C1)
  6. locate and select historic places that support curriculum objectives. (MoSPE 1C1, 3C1)
  7. examine instructional strategies and techniques likely to maximize learning from historic places. (MoSPE 1C1, 4C1, 4C2)
  8. identify opportunities for collaboration between school-based educators and members of the preservation/historic communities in the local area. (MoSPE 1C1, 9C3)
