Course Description

Study of the theoretical, practical and sociological expressions of religions including Hinduism, Buddhism, Chinese religions, Judaism, Christianity and Islam. Special emphasis will be given to the the contemporary religious landscapes of the Americas and the Peoples Republic of China. Prerequisite: RL122.

Course Objectives

  1. To familiarize students with contemporary manifestation of religion in the Americas, including New Religious Movements (NRMs), religion and globalization, and religious pluralism.
  2. To explore the nature of religion and the modern state, particularly in the case of the People’s Republic of China.
  3. To familiarize students with contemporary theories within the field of religious studies.
  4. The course meets general education outcomes II: 9-11.
