Course Description

RL314 is “a study of the theoretical, practical, and sociological expressions of religions, including Hinduism, Buddhism, Chinese religions, Judaism, Christianity, and Islam.” (CMU Catalog).

Course Objectives

In this course, we will work to: 

  1. Familiarize students with contemporary theoretical approaches to the study of religion.
  2. Gain insight into historically neglected communities, including indigenous and folk religious groups.
  3. Understand the relationship of religion, modernity, and globalization through the particular lens of indigenous communities around the world.
  4. Comprehend, analyze, and critique scholarly literature.  
  5. The course meets general education outcomes II: 9-11.
