Course Description

This course is a study of general psychological theories to the prospective special education teacher. There is a brief introduction to developmental stages, learning theories, individual differences and motivation with application in the special education classroom regarding teaching methods, content presentations, and evaluation procedures.

Upon successful completion of the course, each participant should be able:

  • To identify Genetic Contributions to Psychopathology
  • To recognize the Cultural, Social, and Interpersonal Factors regarding Psychopathology
  • To understand neuroscience and its contributions to psychopathology
  • To be familiar with the Clinical Assessment, Diagnosis, and Research involved in Psychopathology
  • To be able to identity Anxiety, Trauma-and Stressor-related, and Obsessive-Compulsive and Related Disorders
  • To recognize the characteristics of Somatic Symptom and Related Disorders and Dissociative Disorders
  • To understand Mood Disorders and Suicide
  • To identify Eating and Sleep-Wake Disorders
  • To be familiar with Substance –Related, Addictive, and Impulse-Control Disorders
  • To identify Personality Disorders
