Course Description

An introduction to the application of psychological theories and research to our understanding, prediction, and promotion of health behavior.  Course topics include stress, exercise, nutrition, sexual behavior, alcohol, smoking, chronic diseases, and terminal illness. Prerequisite: PY101

Course Objectives

  1. Understand the role, responsibilities, and working environment of health psychology.
  2. Appreciate the different types of research designs used to study issues related to health psychology.
  3. Understand the concepts of adherence and wellness.
  4. Examine the role of behavior as it relates to chronic illness.
  5. Comprehend the importance of health and quality of life in light of the increase in life expectancy.
  6. Apply the concepts presented in this course in the therapeutic environment (i.e., hospital, clinic, practice).
