PY346 - PERCEPTION & SENSATION

This course is a survey of the scientific discipline relating to how we perceive the world around us by means of sensory perception.  We will examine the five primary senses of sight, sound, hearing, touch and taste.

It is not a light-weight course because of the complexity of the neural systems that give us a portrait oif our reality.  The most challenging sections will be on sight, partly because this lays the foundation for understanding how the other senses work.  It's all the same basic structure, so once we learn this we can build on it.

The textbook, Sensation and Perception is required reading.  As you instructor I will expect you to read the chapters fully to gain a deeper understanding.  There is no way lectures alone can convey the detail in the text, although the midterm and final exams will be bsed on materials that I cover in the lecture/discussions.

Because of the complexity of the material class attendance is MANDATORY. with case-by-case excuses based on extraordinary circumstances.  Your death is not one of them!

Be prepared to use all of the features of themyCMU website, especially Announcements, Assignments, Resources and Materials and Discussion Forums.

Let's have a good time learning together.
