Course Description

3 hours. Introduction of general psychological theories to the prospective elementary and secondary teacher. There is a brief introduction to developmental stages, learning theories, individual differences and motivation, with application to the classroom in teaching methods, content presentation, and evaluation procedures. (PY210 cannot be counted for psychology credit in the degree programs of Psychology majors or minors without the written permission of the chair of the Division of Social Sciences.)

Course Objectives

Upon successful completion of the course, each participant should be able to:

 

  1. Identify major theories of learning.
  2. State basic principles underlying human development.
  3. Describe ways that students differ in approaches to learning.
  4. Articulate theories of motivation.
  5. Explain major categories of special education.
  6. Illustrate different approaches to classroom/behavior management.
  7. Distinguish between formal/informal assessment activities.
  8. Identify aspects of classroom environments conducive to learning.
  9. Design plans for short-term instruction/management strategies.
  10. Identify strategies/resources to meet diverse student needs.
  11. Describe purposes of assessment.
  12. Prepare to teach a short lesson and feel more comfortable teaching.
