Course Description

Methods of teaching and program development for special needs students in physical education for Grades Pre-K to 12. 3 hours.

Course Objectives

The beginning (pre-service) physical education teacher will demonstrate knowledge of and/ or competency in the following areas:

  1. To advance the understanding of the unique needs of disabled individuals in Physical education as well as adapted physical education program.
  2. The developments of play, leisure, recreation, and sport skills for disabled.
  3. The development of locomotor and non-locomotor skills for disabled.
  4. To advance the understanding of the statutes, regulations, and policies, related to physical education for the disabled. 
  5. Students will be able to develop an acceptable Individualized Education Program (IEP) for physical education.
  6. Students will be able to select and use modified equipment and facilities in teaching disabled individuals.
  7. Students will be able to define terms used in adapted physical education.
  8. Students will be able to understand the individual differences as related to physical activity and changes in performance.
  9. Students will be able to organize and develop methods and techniques of teaching the disabled individuals.
  10. Students will be able to select and use modified equipment and facilities in teaching disabled individuals.
