Course Description

3 hours. Lecture, demonstration and practice of the techniques used in the care and prevention of athletic injuries.

Additional Course Description

This course introduces the physical education student to the basic medical concepts and related scientific information to provide a foundation in the prevention, recognition, assessment, management, disposition, and rehabilitation of sport related injuries and illnesses. This course also provides a laboratory experience involving taping and wrapping techniques of all major anatomical joints.  This class is designed to prepare each student to handle injuries and illnesses involved in coaching, physical education, and the fitness profession.

Course Objectives

Upon successful completion of the course, each participant should be able to:

  • Understand what makes up a sports medicine team and the differences between professions
  • Recognize the signs and symptoms of various athletic related injuries and illnesses
  • Take proper steps to manage and care for various athletic related injuries and illnesses
  • Identify the factors that predispose athletes to injury
  • Recognize various environmental factors associated with athletes
  • Identify steps necessary to perform a general medical evaluation. Evaluations will include; shoulder, elbow, wrist, hand, ankle, foot, knee, hip, lower back, head.
  • Understand accepted guidelines of various government agencies related to sports medicine
  • Locate various anatomical landmarks and injuries to all major joints of the human body
  • Recognize, select, and administer principles of taping, bracing, and splinting of various athletic injuries. Taping includes; ankle, thumb, wrist, shin, elbow, finger, arch.
  • Recognize and apply principles of acute care of injury and illness
  • Learn the latest CPR, choking, and emergency techniques as well as AED use- no certification given
  • Understand liability and legal aspects as well as insurance
  • Consideration of safety and equipment, supervision
  • Nutritional Considerations
  • Understanding of the psychological process of an injured athlete
  • Understanding of Bloodborne Pathogens
  • Fitness Safety Considerations such as proper warm-up/cool-down and exercise techniques
