This course is designed for students majoring in the physical education program. Students will be exposed to the scientific foundations of physical education and sports. The course will provide students with the knowledge base about historical and philosophical events and values of field. The course content is based upon recommendations from
The Missouri Directory of Physical Education Professional and Certification Standards. A variety of teaching methods will be used to reach different cultures and leaning styles.
The beginning (pre-service) physical education teacher will demonstrate knowledge and competency in the following areas:
To introduce students to the scientific meaning and objectives of physical education.
Discuss the goals and objectives of physical education, exercise science, and sport.
Define sport philosophy and describe its historical development as well as develop a personal philosophy of physical education, exercises science, and sport.
To introduce students to the history of physical education and sport and changes that has taken place since the beginning of time.
To introduce students to the scientific foundations of physical education.
Define motor behavior, motor development, motor control, motor learning, and describe the phases of motor development.
To introduce students to the statues, regulations, and policies related to physical education.
To introduce students to the consumer issues related to the marketing, selection and use of products and services.
To introduce students to career opportunities in related fields.
Understand concepts of health- and performance-related fitness.
Identify career opportunities in physical education, exercise sciences, and sport.
