Course Description

Professional Practice in Occupational Therapy

The focus of this course is to promote leadership, performance improvement, and the the occupational therapy profession through the expansion of the OTAs education in leadership and management, outcomes and documentation, interprofessional practice and teams, communication,  supervision, professional standards, and managing a successful career. Students will identify personal leadership styles, core values, purpose, and philosophies for the purpose of individualized professional advancement.

 

Course Objectives

Upon completion of this course students will:

  • Gain the skills to expand their understanding of personal and professional responsibility in being a leader to include advocacy at systems, state and federal levels by earning 4.25 Contact Hours in the topics of leadership exploration, identification of core values, purpose, and personal mission, that lead  to authentic and trusting relationships.
  • Examine broad ideas of leadership, the skills of management, and the role of occupational therapy practitioners as leaders in health care systems and emerging ares of practice.
  • Understand the distinct role of OT practitioners in interprofessional teams.
  • Identify best practices for care delivery, measuring outcomes, and documentation to support value and quality in the healthcare sphere.
  • Promote professional behaviors that motivate and nurture healthy relationships in the work setting.
  • Effectively communicate in ways that promotes professional development, marketing, health and wellness, and education.
  • Identify how to successfully direct a professional path that adjusts across their lifespan and continuum of care.
