Welcome to Special Topics in OTA Practice

This course will operate as a self-driven honors topic. This special topics course serves as a continuation of the coursework started in the OTA baccalaureate projects courses (OTA303, 308, 412). This course will provide a more in-depth study of the original topic, sexuality and the older adult. Alyssa is exploring the impact of caregiver bias and the role contemporary occupational therapy services play in eliminating associated bias. The focus will be on using foundational principles of clinical reasoning that integrates evidence-based practice, inter-professional team dynamics, and awareness of personal and professional responsibilities.

Alyssa’s long-term plan is to build a training program that has three key phases:
1. Initial identification of bias and plan development
2. Educational seminar
3. Sustainability plan

This course  focus will be on the educational seminar component, creating course content & lesson plan with a virtual training session as the assessment component. This virtual training sessions will be provided as a resource to peers in the OTA program (online and seated).  This course meets the ACOTE standard requiring OTA-B students to demonstrate an in-depth knowledge in a practice area through the development and completion of a baccalaureate project in one or more of the following areas: clinical practice skills, administration, leadership, advocacy, and education.
