Course Description

This course provides students an opportunity to develop advanced knowledge and clinical reasoning skills to provide evidence-based clinical management of selected patient populations. Students will apply the principles of evidence-based practice in formulating care and teaching plans for selected patient conditions. Clinical practice hours will be spent in a selected clinical setting mutually agreed upon by the student and faculty member. (2 credit hours:1 didactic/1 clinical/50 clinical contact hours)

Course Objectives

Upon successful completion of the course, each participant should be able to:

  1. Integrate use of the nursing process and evidence-based practice to provide patient-centered, holistic care to selected patient populations.
  2. Perform advanced assessment skills as appropriate for level of competence, scope of practice, and selected patient populations.
  3. Create plans of care which demonstrate advanced critical thinking, clinical decision-making, and evidence-based practice.
  4. Analyze the relationship between evidence-based practice, cost-effectiveness, and patient care quality in the management of selected patient populations.
  5. Design teaching plans to meet the educational needs of selected patient populations.
  6. Develop a plan for promoting evidence-based practice in the health care setting.
  7. Interface and collaborate with interdisciplinary teams to address the patient-centered, holistic needs of the selected patient population.
