2021 CMU Percussion Pedagogy MU545 Syllabus

 

Below is the content and participation expectations for the CMU Percussion Pedagogy class for the Summer of 2021.

 

Needed Materials - Students need to have the appropriate books as listed below

 

- Portraits in Rhythm - Anthony J Cirone/Belwin Publication

- Sequential Studies for Four-Mallet Marimba Book 1 - Gaines Publications

- Masterpieces for Marimba - Thomas McMillan - Alfred Publishing 

- The Solo Timpanist - Vic Firth - Carl Fischer Publication

 

It is helpful for students to have a practice pad and sticks, and mallets as well.  Please let me know ahead of time what you may not be able to have access to.

 

A general Outline of topics covered for each session are as follows (Subject to change): 

 

  • 1st session - Snare Drum

  • 2nd session - Mallets and accessories

  • 3rd session - Timpani, Marching and Special Problems

 

Participation - Participation in discussions, activities and other general class participation will be 50% of the grade.  All students are expected to participate in discussions, ask questions, offer experiences and invest in trying new ideas in the work of Percussion Instruction and understanding.

 

Reflection - Writing reflective papers will be the other 50% of the grade for this course.  After each Session (each session made up of 3, 2 hour blocks) students are expected to submit  reflective writings over the material discussed and experienced in class.  Minimum of 1 page per Block.
