Creed:
            The Central Methodist Community believes in:
                        seeking knowledge, truth, and wisdom;
                        valuing freedom, honesty, civility, and diversity;
                        living lives of service and leadership; and
                        taking responsibility for ourselves and the communities in which we live.

Description:
To discuss and analyze the factors that contribute to each player becoming the finest musician of which they are capable. There will be a significant amount of time spent on developing fundamentals with respect to characteristic tone quality, breath support, articulation, and building technical facility. Primary emphasis will be given to correct posture, breathing, and tone. The development of a personalized warm-up routine is key to building those fundamentals, so attention will be focused on diagnosing and prescribing exercises for individual improvement.  Repertoire studied will comprise a variety of musical styles from the Baroque to the Contemporary musical periods.

Evaluation and Attendance:
            A  grade will be given for each lesson.  These grades will be averaged to               determine a grade for lesson preparation.  Attendance at all lessons is           mandatory.  With each unexcused absence you will lower your grade by 3%.        The only excused absences are for university-sanctioned events.  Doctor's
appointments, driving a friend to an appointment, meeting with other professors, or other similar events are not excused.  Depending on my availability, missed lessons may be rescheduled if you are seriously ill and have cancelled at least 24 hours in advance.  Short notice cancellations will be made up by the student recording the material assigned for the lesson and sending it to the professor by email.  If there is no communication prior to the lesson, a make-up lesson will not be scheduled and you grade will be reduced.

            You are expected to perform successfully on at least one student recital per                      semester. That performance will be reflected in your final grade.

            You will be expected to perform a successful final (jury).  That performance will    also be reflected in your final grade.

            Collaborative pianists for Thursday Morning Recitals, Juries, Chamber Recital, and the American Music Recital are provided to students free of charge.  It is unusual for student musicians to be afforded this privilege and we are happy to provide you with professional collaborative pianists at no cost to you.  However, if you are not respectful of our pianists, you will lose this privilege.  We will allow you one “free” forgetfulness mistake.  The second time you fail to notify at least two-hours in advance of your rehearsal, you will lose this privilege.  You may still use the services of your pianist, but you will have to pay for each lesson and performance.  The approximate cost for a rehearsal is $50 per hour.  Performances may be more depending on the length.

Hearing Protection
            Musicians face a number of health and safety issues, particularly in applied           lessons and ensembles. Hearing concerns, vocal health, and muscle injuries are       a concern for faculty and students. Awareness and education are key to     preventing harmful habits or injuries. In addition to the information shared with you in lessons and rehearsals, there is material available to you regarding best          practices for maintaining hearing, vocal, and muscular health. Helpful information            is posted on the Fine Arts section of the CMU      webpage (http://www.centralmethodist.edu/finearts/current.php).

Central Methodist University has established a grievance policy and process designed to provide students and others with a process to resolve potential issues.  This policy and process is established to provide persons with an avenue to file a written concern and to establish a process to track and implement changes as a result of said concern.  For more detailed information consult the CLAS catalog at:  http://www.centralmethodist.edu/academics/catalog/clas-catalog/policies/index.php.

If an issue cannot be solved through consultation with the faculty or division chair, students can report an incident/issue within 30 days of the event via the online web form (https://cm.maxient.com/reportingform.php?CentralMethodistUniv).
