Textbooks

C. Wayne Patty, Foundations of Topology (2nd Edition) Jones and Bartlett, 2009.  ISBN-13: 978-0-7637-4234-8

Special Course Requirements

There will be two proctored tests, one in Week 7 and the other in Week 15.  These tests must be proctored with the location and conditions approved beforehand by your instructor.

It will be the student’s responsibility to find a proctor for the test and have that proctor approved by the instructor.  The instructor should be given the contact information for the proctor, and will then provide the proctor with a copy of the test.  The student will then take the test in the presence of the proctor, and will then either scan or save the test file in the presence of the proctor and upload the saved test on the Assignments page of myCMU.

Course Description

Course Objectives

Upon successful completion of the course, each participant should be able to:

  • explain the definition of Metric Spaces, Topological Spaces, Product Topology, Quotient Topology, Connectedness, Compactness, Normal and Regular spaces;
  • precisely state the major theorems, and reproduce outlines of their proofs;
  • construct topological examples and counterexamples;
  • apply their knowledge to solve problems; and
  • develop intuition about the correctness of proofs and identify mistakes.
