This course has an assignment that is due by 11:55 pm Central Standard Time on Wednesday night of the first week of class. Failure to complete this assignment will result in your removal from the course for non-participation.

Mathematics central to a comprehensive elementary and middle school mathematics curriculum in a problem-solving context.  Includes the development of the real numbers as a mathematical system and an informal introduction to geometric concepts.  4 Hours.

Upon successful completion of the course, each participant should be able to:

1. Recognize and use a variety of problem solving strategies to answer and explain problems.
   
2. Add, subtract, multiply, and divide with whole numbers, integers, rational numbers, and irrational numbers.
3. Recognize and define the various properties of real numbers including commutative properties of addition and multiplication, associative properties of addition and multiplication, distributive property of multiplication over addition, as well as inverses, identity, and closure for the subsets of the Real Numbers.
4. Use exponents; operate with numbers in exponential form; transform numbers in scientific notation to regular notation and reverse.   
5. Add, subtract, and count in bases other than Base 10; transform Base 10 numbers into other bases and to reverse the process.   
6. Explain the meaning of a place value system and represent Base 10 numbers in expanded notation.   
7. Recognize and classify polygons by sides and by angles.   
8. Recognize, classify, and define polygons, find areas of specific polygons including parallelograms, triangles, and trapezoids.   
9. Solve problems involving geometric figures
