We will purchase textbook during the first class.  Please bring your laptop to class.

A MyMathLab access code is required in order to complete the assignments, including exams for this course. MyMathLab courseware is the web-based software that is used for homework and testing in the course. The access code may be purchased with the textbook through the university bookstore or online with a credit card directly from the publisher.  Students may choose to use the ebook that comes with the MyMathLab access course materials rather than purchasing the hard cover textbook. The MyMathLab software contains a pdf version of the textbook.

Course Special Requirements

Students need a scientific calculator to perform calculations in this course.   A graphing calculator is not necessary.

Course Description

Finite Mathematics is designed to introduce students to concepts of mathematics that are relevant to business and social science applications. This includes topics such as systems and equations related to matrices, linear inequalities and linear programming, basic set theory, probability, measures of central tendency and dispersion, and counting techniques, permutations, and combinations. Prerequisite: College Algebra.

Course Objectives

Upon successful completion of the course, each participant will be able to:
1. Use linear functions to solve problems in business and the social sciences
2. Use the “Method of Least Squares” to fit a set of data points to a linear equation
3. Use matrix methods to solve systems of equations and inequalities
4. Use linear programming to solve optimization problems
5. Use the simplex method to solve problems with multiple variables
6. Use the concepts of counting theory, in particular permutations and combinations
7. Calculate probabilities
