Course Description

3 hrs. A study of the forces and events that transformed nineteenth-century America in the period between 1840 and 1870. The course examines the conduct and impact of the war and its political, economic, and social aftermath.

Course Objectives

  • To give the student an understanding of the basic tactics and strategy of the war
  • To introduce the student to the dominant personalities in the war
  • To introduce the student to the basic issues involved in the conflict and how those issues changed or remained constant
  • To give the student an understanding of the war's geography and how it played a major part in political and military action
