Course Description

GL105 Exploring Geology. 3 hours
This course introduces students to the science of geology.  Topics include the study of the origin of the earth, plate tectonics, volcanoes, weathering, metamorphism, geologic time, evolution, and the history of life on earth.  Labs explore minerals, rocks, fossils, and the living organisms characteristic of different geologic ages.
 
Students should also enroll in GL105L, the lab portion of this course.

Course Objectives

  • To evaluate the types, formation and changes of major terrestrial surface materials (minerals, rocks, soils).
  • To provide an overview of Earth’s major surface features and how they change.
  • To relate landforms and landscapes to geologic processes.
