Course Description

This course focuses on the methods for diagnosis and remediation of mathematical skills and concepts of the special needs learner.  The students will review, evaluate, develop, and provide individual and/or classroom trials of instructional components prepared for teaching remedial mathematics.  The course will develop a greater depth of preparation and development of programs for exceptional children. Prerequisites: Successful passing of MoGEA exam and ED324. (2 credit hours)

 

Course Rationale

This course is to give pre-service and currently practicing teachers the opportunity to diagnose, design and adapt instruction to meet the needs of the diverse learner. 

Course Objectives

The objectives of this course are designed for prospective and practicing teachers to be able to:

  1. Determine the characteristics of students with mathematical disabilities.
  2. Use a variety of instructional practices and materials in the remediation of math difficulties.
  3. Connect active learning strategies to meaningful concepts for the diverse learner.
  4. Become more effective as a teacher to teach mathematics to all children
  5. Be a reflective learner and adjust one’s instructional practices.
