Big Blue Button Meeting Requirements

This is a hybrid course that includes “live” synchronous class meetings one night a week during scheduled class time using the Big Blue Button web conferencing system. Students are required to log in and attend the synchronous meetings. Students will need access to a computer or tablet with reliable high-speed internet connection, along with a webcam, microphone and either speakers or headphones. The remaining credit hours for the course will be fulfilled through online assignments completed in myCMU. Students must participate in the live meetings and online assignments to be successful in this course.

Students will access Big Blue Button meetings by clicking “Online Meetings” located on the left side menu of this course in myCMU. To participate in the meeting click on the appropriate week's link during the scheduled time and day of the course. Recorded sessions can also be accessed here.

Online Access to Connect is required for the course. You are not required to have a printed and bound copy of the textbook.

Connect Access can be purchased:
  1. Online from the publisher once the course begins by following the address given by your instructor and using a credit card.
  2. Through the Central Methodist University bookstore using a book voucher (if eligible). You will receive an access code that you will type in to prove payment.
  3. Through a third party vendor - Be careful to make sure you get an access code that is new and unused. Oftentimes, when the cost of the access code is discounted it may take weeks for it to arrive.

Connect allows for a free 14 day access to the materials if you are waiting for funds. However, the access must be paid for at the end of the two weeks in order to continue with the Connect materials.

Course Description

Mathematics central to a comprehensive elementary and middle school mathematics curriculum in a problem-solving context.  Includes the development of the real numbers as a mathematical system and an informal introduction to geometric concepts.  Only Early Childhood majors may count this course for the General Education Common Core. 4 Hours.

Course Objectives

Upon successful completion of the course, each participant should be able to:

  • Define sets of numbers in the Real Number System.
  • Recognize and use a variety of problem solving strategies to answer and explain problems.
  • Use set theory to assist in problem solving and Venn Diagrams.
  • Use a variety of strategies for all operations in problems.
  • Recognize and define the various properties of real numbers.
  • Work within the Base 10 numerical system and its place value.
  • Recognize, classify, and solve problems involving geometric figures.
  • Recall and apply the English and Metric measurement system.
  • Demonstrate the fundamentals of basic probability and elementary statistics
