Course Description

In developing new technology, software and hardware companies have not overlooked the spectrum of special needs and special education students.  Technology in special education classrooms is an industry within an industry and it is constantly developing and improving products for special needs,  Students will explore current technology such as: using a computer without a monitor for the blind, braille displays, word prediction software, tablets, etc.  3 hours.

Course Objectives

Upon successful completion of the course, each participant should be able to:

 

  • Explain the different categorizations of assistive technology devices.
  • Identify the history of assistive technology in federal legislation.
  • Explain the role of an assistive technology specialist.
  • Identify different frameworks for assistive technology decision-making.
  • Discuss communication and its role in daily lives.
  • Explain the different categorizations of AAC.
  • Provide clear examples of assistive technology for mobility.
  • Provide clear examples of assistive technology for computer access as alternatives to keyboards and mice.
  • Provide clear examples of different types of switches.
  • Consider technology options to support access to printed text.
  • Provide concrete examples of low-tech and high-tech assistive technology to support students in terms of organization and self-monitoring.
  • Provide clear examples of assistive technology to serve as instructional aids for reading, writing, and mathematics.
  • Explain how assistive technology can support individuals with disabilities across the lifespan.
  • Provide examples of assistive technology to support individuals with disabilities in employment.
  • Explain how young children are covered for services under IDEA.
  • Understand the main types of technology to support young children.
