Course Description

This seminar further identifies and explores the organizational roles and responsibilities of the athletic administrator. This course will focus on current events impacting both high school and intercollegiate athletics, the administration of interscholastic athletics, athletics, athletics and the law, legal considerations, cautions and issues (including anti-trust issues, amateur sports issues, Title IX issues, labor issues, tort law issues), and the role of state high school associations now and in the future. Meets MEd Standard I. 3 credits.

Course Objectives

By the end of course, students will be able to:

  • Describe desired professional standards, practices, and ethical principles that should be imbedded in a personal philosophy of athletic administration.
  • Explain the benefits received by the school and community as a result of an effective and efficient athletic program.  Defend the existence of athletic programs and describe how they can positively impact the academic achievement of student participants
  • Identify local, state, and national athletic administration organizations/associations and compare their commonalities and differences.
  • Identify unique aspects of sport management and the types of positions available in the field.
  • Identify critical issues facing athletic administrators in their day-to-day duties.
  • Describe common organizational and “reporting chains” for athletic departments and differentiate the terms management and leadership.
  • Acknowledge the importance of planning, organizing, leading, and evaluating in terms of the management of sport organization.
  • Appreciate the importance of viewing the management of sport as a science and discuss several current challenges and social media issues facing interscholastic and intercollegiate athletic administrators.
  • Define ethical marketing practices, apply ethical reasoning and critical thinking skills related to sport consumer behavior.
  • Explain competencies required for success as a sport manager and explain why communication is a critical concern to all sport managers.
  • Evaluate the best methods of preparing administrators or managers for athletic programs.
  • Interpret the importance of ethics in sport management and understand the current ethical environment.
  • Acknowledge personal ethics and organizational responsibility in athletic programs.
  • Explain the development of ethical sport and managers and explain the importance of critical thinking in management concepts and practice in the sport management.
  • Provide an overview of the field by introducing sport management as an academic major and a career field.
  • Examine professional considerations vital to success in sport management and sport industry.
  • Demonstrate an understanding of the opportunities and challenges that sport managers will face in the future.
