Course Description

Students will become familiar with the organizational roles and responsibilities of the athletic administrator in programs ranging from high school to the intercollegiate level. Learner outcomes will be aligned with both the Missouri State High School Activities Association and the National Interscholastic Athletic Standards. Meets MEd Standard I. 3 hours.

Course Objectives

By the end of course, students will be able to:

 

  • Demonstrate an understanding of the basic knowledge areas for the successful sport manager.
  • Describe fundamental principles, key skills, and knowledge on current issues for an athletic director.
  • Explain the major sport-industry segments in which a sport manager could work.
  • Describe the “pay to play” debates and the movement for the unionization of college student athletes.
  • Explain why sport is a dominant influence in American society.
  • Explain social media’s prevalence today and its usage, role, and impact on sport.
  • Create strategies for the development of an ethical work environment in an athletic department and evaluate the ethical issues confronting sport managers.
  • Explain why a sport organization should effectively manage employment diversity
  • Explain historical perspectives as well as thoughts about current and future industry issues and trends
  • Demonstrate knowledge of the roots of our modern sport management structures
  • Identify local, state, and national athletic administration organizations/associations and compare their commonalities and differences.
  • Explain the process and benefits of obtaining voluntary national certification as an athletic administrator.
  • Defend the existence of athletic programs and describe how they can positively impact the academic achievement of student participants.
  • Describe common organizational and “reporting chains” for athletic departments within large school districts and post-secondary institutions.
