Course Description

This course provides a study of teaching and learning situations in secondary schools and the application of reading and writing strategies in various content areas. Emphasizes preparation of materials for the classroom. This course includes 12 clock hours of clinical experience. Prerequisite: Successful passing of MoGEA exam.

 

Course Objectives

  1. Examine the role of the secondary content area teacher in literacy instruction. (MoSPE 1C1, 1C2, 2C4, 2C5) (SSC 1-1, 1-2, 2-1)
  2. Explore methods and materials secondary content area teachers can use to improve the reading ability of their students. (MoSPE 1C2, 1C4, 1C5, 2C4, 2C5) (SSC 2-6, 3-3, 3-4, 3-5, 4-4, 4-5, 4-6) 
  3. Examine and discuss literacy and learning theories applicable to secondary students. (MoSPE 2C3) (SSC 1-3, 2-4, 2-5, 3-1) 
  4. Provide information about the ways societal, cultural, cognitive, psychological and physical factors affect learning to read and write for secondary students and how teachers can help mitigate the effects of these factors. (MoSPE 2C1, 2C2, 2C3, 2C4, 2C5, 2C6) (SSC 2-2, 2-3, 2-6)
  5. Engage in and develop critical thinking strategies and learn ways of teaching critical thinking skills. (MoSPE 4C1, 4C2, 4C3) (SSC 3-7, 4-7, 4-9)
  6. Teach students to utilize instructional media as learning and teaching tools. (MoSPE 6C4) (SSC 3-5, 4-8)
