Course Description

The problems, methods, and materials of teaching music in the secondary schools. (3 cr. hrs.)

Prerequisite: ED369

Course Objectives

Upon successful completion of the course, each participant should be able to:

  1. Understand the role of a music educator as an administrator and discuss the various duties that are to be performed.
  2. Discuss why music should be taught in the public schools.
  3. Discuss how music should be taught in the public schools.
  4. Discuss the characteristics that one would find in a good music teacher.
  5. Understand the structure of the public school administration and discuss techniques to develop a good working relationship with your building administrator(s).
  6. Discuss building a music curriculum for both performance-based classes and non- performance-based classes.
  7. Understand the importance of planning and create lesson plans that will foster student learning.
  8. Understand and construct assessment tools for the music classroom.
  9. Discuss the Grade Level Expectations and National Core Arts Standards.
  10. Discuss the importance of classroom management and create strategies and procedures that will help them have a well-managed classroom.
