Course Special Requirements

Students will need to complete 20 hours in a practicum setting to fulfill the requirements of this course. 

For this section of the course you will need a headset/ microphone to interact with the class through the Elluminate program. The can be purchased at Walmart for under $10.

Course Description

Discussion, reading, and practical examination of objectives, methods and equipment used in teaching fields of science in secondary and middle schools. Prerequisite:  Successful passage of the MoGEA.  

Course Objectives

Students who successfully complete this course will be able to:
  1. Develop lesson plans with consideration to the Missouri Frameworks, Standards and the GLE’s and CLE’s.
  2. Understand the state level testing process such as the MAP test and the new Exit test.
  3. Have a working knowledge of the basics of classroom and behavior management.
  4. Demonstrate various classroom management techniques associated with teacher effectiveness.
  5. Explain contemporary issues in education such as Performance-Based Teacher Evaluation, special needs of students, and teaching and learning styles.
  6. Demonstrate an understanding of the importance of preparation and planning concerning areas such as parent-teacher conferences, involving parents in learning events and school activities, and faculty meetings.
  7. Develop strategies for assessing student progress.
  8. Understand the importance of maintaining a safe science classroom.
  9. Help students conduct original student centered scientific research, and understand the methods involved in presenting that research.
  10. Demonstrate the ability to use professional resources related to teaching, including but not limited to various classroom technologies
