This course has an assignment that is due by 11:55 pm Central Standard Time on Wednesday night of the first week of class. Failure to complete this assignment will result in your removal from the course for non-participation.

Course Special Requirements

Students must upload their teaching video using Panopto on myCMU. Be sure to practice that prior to the assignment being due.

Students will also need to log 15 practicum hours with a business education teacher.

Special FCSR Requirement

To complete this course, you must be registered with the Family Care Safety Registry. Failure to register by Wednesday of the first week of class will result in your removal from the course.

1) Effective Methods of Teaching Business Education in the 21st Century, 2020 ISBN 9780933964846 (purchase at https://nbea.org/ or use own personal copy if member of NBEA); Choose the Shop link on the NBEA main page and then choose Publications. From there you can purchase it for $60. It will ask you a number of times if you are a member, but you don’t have to be. If you are a member, you may be able to download free from the NBEA library. This publication can sometimes be purchased from Amazon or other book providers, but sometimes it will cost more than from the publisher's site.

Course Description

The problems, methods and materials of teaching business in the secondary schools. 3 credit hours.

Course Objectives

Students should be able to:

  1. discuss the career education/business education program: philosophy, mission, objectives, design, organization, trends, etc.
  2. discuss the importance of lesson plans and create lesson plans to accompany teaching unit
  3. discuss teacher evaluation and assessment and its importance in the career education
  4. discuss differentiated instruction.       
  5. discuss the importance of and design a course syllabus to be used in the business education classroom.
  6. create a video teaching segment to be reviewed by instructor and peers.
  7. review teaching strategies for various business education courses.
  8. discuss common core competencies.
  9. discuss Course Level Expectations and the Common Core State Standards.
  10. discuss importance of classroom management and create strategies
  11. discuss NCLB and other legislation and its impact on business education
  12. evaluate business education resources available on DESE website
