This course is designed to:

1. Provide theoretical information about language development and assessment (reading, writing, speaking, and listening). (SSC 1-1, 1-2, 1-3, 2-1, 2-4, 2-5, 3-1, 3-3, 3-9, 4-5) (PRAXIS II-2, II-3, III-1) (MOSPE 1C3, 2C)
2. Provide pedagogical information about teaching and assessing language processes (reading, writing, speaking, and listening) to middle school students. (SSC 1-1, 1-2, 1-3, 2-1, 2-4, 2-5, 2-6, 3-1, 3-3, 3-4, 3-9, 4-2, 4-5, 4-8) (PRAXIS II-2, II-3, III-1) (MOSPE 7C1, 7C2, 7C3, 7C1, 7C2)
3. Provide information about ways middle school teachers can improve the literacy skills of students in their content areas. (SSC 4-2, 4-3, 4.8) (MOSPE 2C2, 1C5, 1C1, 1C4)
4. Provide information about the ways societal, cultural, cognitive, psychological, and physical factors affect learning to read and write for middle school student and how teachers can help mitigate the effect of these factors (SSC 2-3. 2-4, 2-5, 2-6) (MOSPE 2C1, 2C5, 1C3, 4C1, 2C4, 3C2, 3C3, 7C1, 7C2)
5. Engage in and develop critical thinking strategies and learn ways of teaching critical thinking skills. (SSC 3-7, 3-8, 4-4, 4-6, 4-8) (MOSPE 1C3, 1C2, 4C1, 9C3)
6. Teach students to utilize instructional media as learning and teaching tools. (SSC 4-7) (MOSPE 6C4, 8C3)
