Course Description

Basic foundations of reading development. Includes current research, theories, techniques, and materials that meet both individual and group needs in oral and written language. Emphasis on the integration of the language arts: reading, writing, speaking and listening. Developing and sharing instructional methodology for diverse students is integral to this course.

NOTE: This course includes 8-10 clock hours of clinical experiences.

Course Objectives

Pre-service teachers who successfully complete ED 315 will:

  • Demonstrate knowledge of major theories and models regarding literacy and literacy instruction as well as their own beliefs and theories. (Assignments: KWL Chart; Theories:  Venn diagram: 5 min. write Where my theory fits on my Venn Diagram)
  • Identify and explain structures in the Reading/Writing Curriculum that support readers and writers (Assignments: R&C 1-5)
  • Identify, explain, and apply strategies for comprehension of fiction and non-fiction texts (Talk strategy lesson, Phonics mini-lesson, Peer teaching reading mini-lesson, Writing mini-lesson)

 

  • Examine and practice making curricular decisions based on action research regarding literacy programs, core competencies in Communication Arts, and study of best practices.
