Course Description

This course is designed to acquaint pre-service middle-school and secondary-school teachers with strategies for classroom and behavior management. Students will address such topics as creating social relationships in the classroom, increasing student motivation, minimizing disruptive behavior, and understanding the effects of classroom management on behavior and learning.

 

Course Objectives

Upon successful completion of the course, each participant should be able to:

  1. Demonstrate knowledge and identification of models and theories of behavior problems, including theories of reinforcement (MoSPE 5C1).
  2. Plan and implement individualized reinforcement systems and environmental modifications (MoSPE 2C4, 5C1).
  3. Incorporate strategies to teach individuals how to use self-assessment, problem solving, and other cognitive strategies to meet their needs (MoSPE 4C1, 8C1).
  4. Display effective practices to integrate academic instruction, affective education, and behavior management for individual students and groups of students (MoSPE 5C2).
  5. Examine elements and key components of classroom management (MoSPE 5C1, 5C2).
  6. Develop effective classroom management theories, models, and techniques (MoSPE 5C1, 5C2, 5C3).
  7. Modify learning environments to manage behaviors (MoSPE 5C1, 5C2, 5C3).
  8. Recognize characteristics of an effective teacher (MoSPE 5C1, 5C2, 5C3).
  9. Build strategies that enhance classroom community (MoSPE 5C1, 5C2, 5C3).
