The cooperation between home, school, and community is essential to provide a supportive educational environment for the young child. Includes: community exploration from a historical, philosophical, and social perspective; basic principles related to community resources; various child-rearing and parenting styles; and methods of utilizing and communicating with families and the community. Cultural and socioeconomic factors, realities of the changing family, and variations among parent education program types are considered.  Prerequisite: ED103

Upon completion of the course, a student will be able to:

1. Enter a new community and become familiarized with its resources and historical background.
2. Assemble a list of social services available in the community for children and families.
3. Plan community field trips that are safe, economical, and developmentally appropriate learning experiences.
4. Discuss the importance of and plan for a variety of opportunities for parental involvement in the early childhood program.
5. Explore and discuss the historical, psychological and social foundations of parental involvement in the early childhood program.
6. Articulate the purpose for and methods of advocacy for children and their families.
7. Explore and discuss family development, child rearing and parenting styles.
8. Examine and discuss teacher attitudes and personal biases about children and families.
9. Review that teachers are mandated reporters of child abuse and neglect and articulate the reporting procedure.
