FINE ARTS DEPARTMENT ATTENDANCE POLICY

Because your participation in class is vital to your success, you are expected to

attend every class session.  Since this is a three hour class, three absences are allowed.

The fourth absence will result in the reduction of your grade by 15%. The fifth absence

garners a 30% reduction. The sixth absence will result in lowering the grade by 45%,

which means failing the class.

The only excused absences are for official university activities for which the instructor

is notified in advance by the student and the faculty sponsor. All other absences will

count toward your total number.  Two tardies constitute an absence.

INTRO TO DRAWING SYLLABUS (parts applying specifically to studio drawing)

Course Description

Students will explore the art of drawing using a variety of media and techniques. Emphasis will be placed on the elements and principles of art and design. The student is expected to develop disciplined work habits and an understanding of the visual artist's vocabulary. The course includes components of art history and theory. Sketchbooks/journals will be used for in-class and out-of-class drawings and notations.

Fulfills the Fine Arts requirement. No prerequisites.

Required Supplies

Students are responsible for purchasing their own supplies. These individual supplies are pre-ordered and will be   bundled and available for purchase at the campus bookstore. Some additional supplies will be available in the classroom.

 

Course Outcomes

The successful art student will demonstrate the ability to:

1. Understand and incorporate the elements of art and design in their drawings.

2. Draw from observation, applying the process of seeing to the process of drawing.

3. See and articulate accurate proportions, volume, scale, and color.

4. Use line, value, and color to show form and represent volume, space, and movement.

5. Use linear perspective in the creation of volume and space.

6. Understand the historical, cultural, and social contexts of the arts.

7. Articulate aesthetic responses to works of art.

 

Grading Policy 

Grading will be based on:

1. The ability to develop and transcribe visual information.

2. Technical and artistic proficiency.

3. Understanding techniques and applying information to projects with intelligence, maturity, and creativity.

4. Timely completion of assignments.

5. Class attendance and participation.

 

Grade designations: (Letter grade A-F)

A - Indicates completion of all assignments, exemplary attendance, great effort, and success in all aspects of the class.

B - Indicates completion of all assignments, exemplary attendance, strong advances in technical and conceptual skills and thinking.

C - Indicates completion of all assignments, good attendance, hard work, and growth in skills and thinking.

D - Indicates the minimum effort in understanding course skills and concepts and/or has not fulfilled the requirements because of excessive tardiness, absence, or lack of effort.

F - Indicates a lack of interest and understanding of concepts, lack of effort, ineptitude in basic skills and craftsmanship, failure to complete assignments, excessive tardiness or absence.
