Social Security Death Index (SSDI) Original post: Sun 9/9/2018 at 7:46 PM

I am wondering, how many people are on the Social Security Death Index (SSDI)? I wonder if there has ever been some type of fraud that has happened in the past to do with the Death Index? How would anyone ever know if there had been any type of fraud that had happened with someone that was deceased information?

Crystal,

That is a really interesting question. I know that the purpose of the SSDI is to prevent fraud and make accessible the records of the deceased to be easily accessible by other government organizations. However, you are absolutely right to suspect that deceased social security numbers are often used by criminals. In taxes, the number of fraudulent tax returns filed with deceased social security numbers is staggering. Individual file returns under the deceased name and claim the refunds as their own. I often wondered how individuals were able to get away with this type of tax/identity fraud with the presence of the SSDI. The IRS and Department of Treasury cross-references every return with the Social Security Administration. My only thought is that there is a delay in processing between the death of the individual and the posting of their information to the SSDI. I have attached an article about this topic that you might find interesting. Maybe it can lead you to more information on the subject.

Hi, Crystal! This is a very good question. I remember when it was election time there was a lot of talk about how people used the information of deceased people to vote. While I do not know if it is true or not, it makes me think that anything is possible. There are people who commit this type of fraud. I think the only way anyone would find out is if someone just happened to notice that information from a deceased person was being used or if a family member received mail about it.

Hello Crystal, this was a very good question. I didnt even think about that till I read your post. That's a very interesting point that people would use deceased peoples ID to vote again. You would think that they would get caught in the act of doing so. But I guess they don't get caught and cheat their way through life. But overall good post and I actually looked up an article on this and it was very helpful to understand what is actually going on.
