Course Description

An introduction to the foundations of human behavior. Course topics include the roles of brain function, hormones, and heredity as they relate to personality, sex differences, psychopathology, language, emotion, memory, sleep, and sensation/perception. Prerequisite: PY101.

Course Objectives

Upon successful completion of the course, each participant should be able to:

  • Describe the structure and function of the neural foundations of human behavior.
  • Describe the structure and function of stress, immunity, and health.
  • Describe the structure and function of brain changes in learning.
  • Formulate the important distinction of allostasis and homeostasis in the interdependence of the central nervous system, the endocrine system, and the immune system.
  • Make recommendations for practical solutions for psychological problems with biological causes
  • Summarize current issues in the field such as the biological basis of intelligence and cognitive functioning
  • Analyze and critique professional literature in the field of biological psychology and behavioral neuroscience.
  • Understand the application of biological psychology and apply the principles of biological psychology to the understanding of psychological problems.
