1. To provide the student with a basic understanding of the term “exceptional” as it relates to the educational process.
2. To present an overview of current issues and trends in educational programming, legal requirements, and multicultural issues.
3. To provide an overview of the categories of special education, ranging from mental retardation, behavioral disorders, physical disabilities, and giftedness.
4. To expose the student to a variety of special needs of exceptional students and some of the services available to them.
