Course Description

An introduction to research design, social measurement, analytic strategies and applied statistical techniques relevant to the interpretation of social phenomena. Cross-listed with CJ/HI/PS/SO 331. 

Course Objectives

Upon successful completion of the course, each participant should be able to:

  • Understand the difference between scientific and non-scientific reasoning.
  • Examine the ethical problems involved in doing research.
  • Learn techniques of quantitative research including: hypothesis creation and testing, questionnaire design and implementation, experiments, and basic data analysis.
  • Learn basic techniques in qualitative research including: interviews, observations, and the coding process.
  • Learn to understand published research.
