Course Description

Introduction of general psychological theories to the prospective elementary and secondary teacher. There is a brief introduction to developmental stages, learning theories, individual differences and motivation, with application to the classroom in teaching methods, content presentation, and evaluation procedures. (PY210 cannot be counted for Psychology credit in the degree programs of Psychology majors or minors without the written permission of the chair of the division of Social Sciences.)

Course Objectives

The student will:

  2. State the basic principles underlying human development. (MoSPE 2C1)
  3. Describe ways that students differ in their approaches to learning. (MoSPE 2C4, 2C5, 2C6 )
  4. Articulate theories of motivation (MoSPE 5C1, 5C2, 5C3)
  5. Explain the major categories of special education. (MoSPE 3C2, 3C3)
  6. Illustrate different approaches to classroom and behavior management. (MoSPE 5C1, 5C2)
  7. Distinguish between a formal and informal assessment activities.       (MoSPE 7C1)
  8. Identify aspects of classroom environment conducive to learning. (MoSPE 5C3)
  9. Design plans for short-term instruction and management strategies. (MoSPE 3C3)
  10. Identify strategies and resources to meet diverse student needs.     (MoSPE 3C2)
  11. Describe the purposes of assessment. (MoSPE 7C1, 7C2)
