Course Description

Emphasis is on the study of the effects of exercise on various systems of the body and its relationship on the physiological aspects of human nature (K-12).   Prerequisite: BI101 or BI107

Course Objectives

The beginning (pre-service) education and physical education teacher will be able to do the following upon completion of the course:

  1. Define exercise physiology and understand the importance of exercise physiology to the practitioner.
  2. List and discuss the nutrients that are used as fuels during exercise.
  3. Discuss the biochemical pathways in both anaerobic and aerobic production of ATP.
  4. Discuss the interaction between aerobic and anaerobic ATP production during exercise as well as identify the enzymes involved in the cycle.
  5. Describe the mechanism by which steroid hormones act on cells.
  6. Discuss the procedure used to estimate energy expenditure during exercise.
  7. Describe the structure and function of nerve and muscle as well as their role during exercise.
  8. Discuss the relationship between skeletal muscle fiber types and performance.
  9. Outline the circulatory and respiratory responses to various types of exercise.
  10. Define the four processes by which the body can lose heat during exercise and list the physiological adaptations that occur during acclimatization to heat.
  11. Describe and explain the functional changes caused by exercise sessions in terms of frequency, duration, and intensity.
  12. Understand the principles governing different types of training programs and the guidelines of exercise prescription.
  13. Better evaluate physical fitness in themselves and others and prescribe a program to improve fitness level.
  14. Understand the concept of health- and performance-related fitness and appreciate the role of physical activity and health.
