Big Blue Button Meeting Requirements

This is a hybrid course that includes “live” synchronous class meetings one night a week during scheduled class time using the Big Blue Button web conferencing system. Students are required to log in and attend the synchronous meetings. Students will need access to a computer or tablet with reliable high-speed internet connection, along with a webcam, microphone and either speakers or headphones.

The remaining credit hours for the course will be fulfilled through online assignments completed in myCMU. Students must participate in the live meetings and online assignments to be successful in this course.

Students will access Big Blue Button meetings by clicking “Online Meetings” located on the left side menu of this course in myCMU. To participate in the meeting click on the appropriate weeks link during the scheduled time and day of the course. Recorded sessions can also be accessed here.

Course Description

Fundamental skills, sports, and games for the elementary school physical education program. Students will study and develop knowledge, understanding participation and application in teaching motor skills in the primary grades. K-9. 3 credit hours

Course Objectives

Upon successful completion of the course, each participant should be able to:

  1. Define physical education and its role in the elementary school experience. (CMU 4B) (DESE 1C1)
  2. Knowledge of history and philosophical issues related to elementary physical education. (CMU 1A)
  3. Identify essential components of a quality physical education program.
  4. Knowledge of conditioning practices and principles; frequency, intensity, duration effects of training. (DESE 2C3)
  5. Design activities to improve fundamental movement skills (locomotor, non-locomotor, manipulative) and movement concepts; personal fitness and wellness concepts. (DESE 2C1)
  6. Identify characteristics of a quality lesson plan. (CMU1C) (DESE 1C2)
  7. Design developmental, individual, dual, and team activities (DESE 4C3)
  8. Knowledge of developmental games, including outdoor activities and non-competitive physical activities. (DESE 4C3)
  9. Know how to teach for the promotion of diversity in physical education classes. (CMU 5C)(DESE 3C2, 6C2)
  10. Describe the role of the teacher as it pertains to managing children in a physical education setting. (DESE 5C1, 5C2)
  11. Design various types of rhythmic and dance activities.
  12. Competency in of safety, injury prevention, and emergency procedures, supervision and liability.
