Course Description

Examines recognized and successful ways of setting up physical education and athletic programs and carrying them out to meet stated aims and objectives.  Specific attention is given to dealing with curriculum development, program creation, finance, physical layout, school policies, safety policies/practices, record keeping, and purchasing and caring for equipment.

Course Objectives

Upon successful completion of the course, each participant should be able to:                                         

  • Define management and a philosophy of management for physical education and sport.                                                                                                                    
  • Identify issues relevant to contemporary physical education and sport management.
  • Define an efficient and effective organization for managing physical education program in elementary and secondary schools.
  • Organize various types of competition for intramural and extramural activities.
  • Explain some of the management considerations involved in sport programs relating to scheduling, crowd control, traveling and discuss the purpose of and the values derived from participating in competitive sport programs.
  • Outline key provisions and issues of Title IX and gender equity concerning the conduct of interscholastic and intercollegiate sport.
  • Identify and describe the role of physical education and sport professionals in public and private sectors.
  • Explain why program development is an important part of the management process in physical education and develop a procedure for assessing a program.
  • Prepare a list of principles that could be used in planning, constructing, and managing facilities for physical education, recreation, and sport programs and describe the duties and responsibilities of facilities managers.
  • Explain the budgeting process and formulate a physical education, recreation, and sport budget.
  • Identify and describe the legal concepts impacting physical education and sport.
  • Gain knowledge of school sport insurance and sport insurance coverage.
  • Demonstrate knowledge of sport product liability, liability of physical education teachers, coaches and risk management.
