Course Description

2 hours. This course will explore the scientific physiological and behavioral changes that occur in the body in response to exercise and sport training with emphasis in research, biomechanics, motor learning, exercise physiology, nutrition, law and ethics.  It will offer instruction and practice through teaching strategies and active participation to demonstrate developmentally appropriate strength and conditioning principles to both K-12 students and collegiate athletes.

Course Objectives

Upon successful completion of the course, each participant should be able to:

  1. Demonstrate the understanding and comprehension of basic principles in Exercise Science.
  2. Demonstrate a basic understanding of anatomy, biomechanics, physiology, kinesiology, nutrition, and research related to human movement.
  3. Identify career related fields within Exercise Science and understand the basic requirements to pursue them.
  4. Describe the National Strength and Conditioning Association and certification criteria. (CMU 6A, 6B)
  5. Discuss the proper safety procedures while in a weight room, athletic facility, or other areas where activities might be performed. (CMU 4B) (MoSPE 6C1)
  6. Identify essential components of a quality weight training program for high school and college aged students.(CMU4C, 5D, 5E)
  7. Complete a weight training program based on proper understanding and principles of weight training. (CMU4C)
  8. Demonstrate proper weight training techniques for various lifts and exercises.
  9. Teach a weight training lesson to fellow students concentrating on development of strength, flexibility, speed, and quickness. (CMU 4A) (MoSPE 1C2, 2C6, 4C2)
  10. Identify proper nutritional guidelines to follow while involved in a weight training program.
  11. Identify the impact that Exercise Science plays in society and its benefits.
