COURSE DESCRIPTION, PURPOSES, OUTCOMES

Description

This course in Music History will provide an opportunity for students to develop strategies for implementing successful and practical teaching methods in the music classroom.

Purposes and Outcomes

Develop the critical thinking skills necessary to study history through the medium of music.

Analyze primary sources effectively to gain understanding of the history of music from ancient Greece to today.

Compare and contrast different historical periods of music, including discovering what led to transitions between musical periods.

Listen to and identify representative musical example with an analytical and discerning ear.

Discuss intelligently the progression of music throughout Western culture.

Write clear and concise reflective essays analyzing musical developments, styles, etc. from a historical perspective.

Create lesson plans that can be used in the classroom setting. These lessons are to be based upon thematic units from 3 of the 6 periods in music history (1 for each of the summer sessions:

Class Session Format

Introduction of session “plan”
Review of previous session
General reflection on Musical Period to be presented, etc. Student presentations to class
In-class Forum discussion of student presentations

Assignment Information Session 1 a. (June 9)

Discuss Music History “timeline” Ancient to 1600 CE
The students will analyze lesson plans from previous cohorts

The students will discuss possible ideas for the first assignment:
Develop (via interest groups) a tentative a Lesson plan that teaches a concept from:

*Ancient Greece, Renaissance, to Medieval Period (Middle Ages)
** Will be presented to class during Session 1b (Thurs. 6/10

morning)
Write a reflection essay (300-500 words) on content studied/lesson plan created.

Note: The reflection essay will be submitted electronically to the instructor by June 16.

Session 2

Prepare a lesson plan that teaches a concept from: Baroque to Classical

To be presented in class on Wednesday, June 29 or Thursday, June 30. A PDF file, Powerpoint or other medium for presentation will be used in class.

Write a reflection essay on content studied/lesson plan created.
Note: The essay is to be submitted electronically to instructor by July 14 (2 wks due to 4th of J).

Session 3

Prepare a lesson plan that teaches a concept from: Romantic-20th Century/Modern

To be presented in class on Wednesday, July 20 or Thursday, July 21. A PDF file, Powerpoint or other medium for presentation will be used in class.

Write a reflection essay on content studied/lesson plan created. Note: The content essay is to be submitted electronically to instructor by July 28.

All work (original or copy) submitted by the student to satisfy the requirement of this course may be retained at the discretion of the instructor for non-profit and education purposes. Such work is generally used for assessing the course and providing evidence of student accomplishment for review by accrediting agencies.
