Course Special Requirements

Must own a licensed copy of Microsoft Office, version 2007 or later.

Must have access to speakers or headphones.

Must have an internet connection capable of streaming video and audio. (DSL, cable, or T5 connections are recommended.)

Optional – Access to video editing software, video camera, and scanner.

Students are required to attend 2 approved concerts near their location throughout the course.

Course Description

Designed to serve the cultural interests of students not concentrating in music. Lectures and assigned readings are supplemented by recorded music. No credit toward a major in Music. Fulfills “Fine Arts” requirement.

Course Objectives

This course will allow the successful student to:

  • discuss the development of music in relation to historical and cultural contexts. 
  • identify key musical figures/composers and the elements of music in selections representative of the historical periods and genres. 
  • develop listening skills to permit an intellectual and emotional response to music through written discussions of music. 
  • cultivate an appreciation and an aesthetic response to a variety of musical styles.
