Course Description

Including sets, relations, functions, metric spaces, compactness, completeness and connectedness. Prerequisite or Co-requisite: MA504 and MA509.  3 hours.

Course Objectives

Upon successful completion of the course, each participant should be able to:

  • explain the definitions of metric spaces, continuity, topological spaces, product topology, subspace topology, connectedness, and compactness.
  • precisely state the major theorems, and reproduce outlines of their proofs
  • construct topological examples and counterexamples
  • apply the theorems and definitions to prove results and other characterizations of concepts such as continuity, open, compactness
  • develop intuition about the correctness of proofs and identify mistakes.
