Online access to the Hawkes courseware is the only resource required for this course. The majority of the homework will be done in the Hawkes Learning Courseware (online). You must purchase the online access. The recommendation is that you purchase it directly from Hawkes. However, if you need to use a CMU book voucher, then it is also available through the online bookstore. If you would like a physical textbook to read, choose the option that has the Paper Textbook.

 

Course Description

An introduction to the basic concepts of calculus with business and social science applications.  3 credit hours.

Additional Prerequisites / Conditions: Meet or exceed University policy for College Algebra (3 hour course); or MA103 or MA103I with a C or better. Not open to students having credit in MA118 or its equivalent

 

Course Objectives

Upon successful completion of the course, each participant should be able to:

  • Find and interpret slope of a line and of a curve at a point.
  • Interpret function values and rates of change.
  • Find and interpret derivatives.
  • Use derivatives to find maxima and minima.
  • Sketch curves based on information from a derivative.
  • Model real-world applications using a derivative.
  • Evaluate, interpret, and differentiate exponential and logarithmic functions.
  • Find, and evaluate a definite integral.
  • Find area in the xy-plane.
  • Interpret a definite integral in the context of a problem.
  • Apply integrals to real-world situations.
