Course Description

A survey of the American Military during peace and war from the Colonial times to the present.  Major American and world political leaders and their top military commanders are examined in their social and historical contexts. Cross-listed with PS320.

Course Objectives

Upon successful completion of the course, each participant should be able to:

  • discuss the Major American Wars, battles, engagements and conflicts, their causes and results, between 1607 and 2012
  • describe the major battles and campaigns of these wars and the strategies and tactics employed.
  • express in clear terms the evolving nature of U.S. military policy, and the effect of political influences.
  • examine technical innovations and their impact upon the military science of war.
  • analyze the role of leadership in war and be able to identify key leaders and their decisions.
  • evaluate the impact of war on society
  • understand the difference between limited and total war and the overall evolution of warfare.
